Stonehenge is one of the most famous archeological sites in the world. Located in Wiltshire, England, the site is made up of the remains of a ring of standing stones that are built within earthworks, constructed sometime between 3,000 BC to 2,000 BC.
Although it is still not clear why Stonehenge was built, one controversial theory by Boston University astronomer, Gerald Hawkins that emerged in the 1960s asserts that it was used by ancient astronomers as a way to mark the summer and winter solace, and also to predict solar and lunar eclipses. However, this theory has not been widely accepted, though it is interesting that Stonehenge does correspond to some astrological phenomena, which you can read about in depth in this pamphlet from the Royal Astronomical Society.
